Our Anglican parishes are often very active in serving their communities. The Ministries listed on this page have people involved from many parishes and, in some cases, many denominations. They look beyond a particular parish to engage a wider context. The inter-parish collaboration we see in these projects shows what can be done by working together.
Several examples of how Anglican congregations are cooperating with God's mission in the larger community are listed below. Click here to view the panels.

The Community Ministry seeks to be a witness to the power of God's transforming love in the inner city. Our approach strikes a balance between meeting basic needs, enabling personal transformation through providing self-help alternatives and education and working with others for social and political change.
Please visit our website for a complete list of programs. These programs include:
- a daily Drop-In Centre where community members find a warm, safe and welcoming atmosphere
- a twice-weekly Food Supplement Program distributing food from Winnipeg Harvest
- an Artists Circle encouraging members to explore their creative side
- seasonal celebrations
- a summer program built around community gardens
History
In 1972, Home St. and St. Paul’s United Churches amalgamated to form Maryland United Church. They created a partnership with St. Matthew’s Anglican Church jointly to use the St. Matthew’s Church building. The partnership also initiated an outreach ministry to the surrounding community — St. Matthew’s-Maryland Community Ministry (SMMCM).
In 1992, when Maryland United Church ceased to exist, their place in the partnership was assumed by Winnipeg Presbytery. The geographical boundaries of the Ministry extend from Portage Ave. on the south, Notre Dame Ave. on the north, Balmoral St. on the east and Arlington St. on the west.
Financial Support
The Ministry annually receives funds from the Maryland Trust through the Winnipeg Presbytery as well as a Mission and Service Fund grant through United Church of Canada. St. Matthew’s Church supports the Ministry with a gift-in-kind of the office and program space. Other programs are funded through short-term project grants, for example, Community Garden Preserves and Catering Project have been supported by United Way, Winnipeg Foundation, and LITE. Project funding also supports Art from the Heart, the Urban Green Team, computers in the Drop-In, expanded programming for children and families. Individuals and groups, especially our partners, contribute more than 10% of our annual budget through donations.
To obtain more information about donations or to donate, contact the Ministry directly at (204) 774-3957.

Annual Garden Tour
For almost 10 years, the Ministry has held an Urban Retreats Garden Tour in mid-June as a fundraiser. Gardens are recruited from a different city neighbourhood each year. A partner church in the area puts on a Prairie Tea to give garden visitors a break from touring. Volunteers organize the tour, host the gardens and sell tickets, all helping to raise about $3,000 annually.
Institutional Partnerships
St. Matthew’s-Maryland works in partnership with a host of agencies in Winnipeg, such as Winnipeg Harvest, Spence Neighbourhood Association, KLINIC, West Central Community Program, West Central Women’s Resource Centre, Centre for Christian Studies, the Just Income Coalition, and the Joint Inner City Ministries Volunteer Project. As well, the Ministry is fortunate to have partners from United and Anglican Churches. Partner church volunteers provide vital support: hosting in the Drop-in, organizing some special events, providing emergency food year round; gifts for the Christmas Store, and support of the garden tour. In turn, Ministry staff present worship or workshops, on request, to educate about social justice issues or promote Ministry programs.

West Broadway Community Services Inc. (WBCS), in partnership with All Saints Anglican Church and Young United Church, provides a safe, accepting environment in which services and programs are offered to respond to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of individuals and families within the West Broadway neighbourhood.
WBCS seeks to do this in ways that enable and sustain community among those who are isolated.
It serves in a three-fold fashion:
- responding to urgent needs;
- promoting self-help and skill development;
- advocating in matters of social justice.
WBCS works in cooperation with area residents, community groups, local organizations, government, churches and other faith groups to develop a shared vision for an improved community. WBCS is a ministry through which God’s love, as known in Christ, is expressed in active, practical and concrete ways.
One of the programs living along side the Community Ministry in the lower level of St. Matthew’s Church, in what is referred to as the Neighbourhood Resource Centre, is the West Central Community Program. It has been a strong presence in St. Matthew’s for over 30 years, offering programming focused on the needs of school-age children. The staff provides programs mainly after school and during the summer months, both in the local schools as well as in the Neighbourhood Resource Centre. An article describing one of their programs can be found by clicking: WCCP article.

The Thelma Wynne Project has been in existence in one way or another for over 50 years. For much of that time it has been located within St. Matthew’s church building. Dedicated women from Anglican churches in the city make or collect items and then prepare layettes for newborns. The layettes are distributed through social agencies in the city to new mothers who need them. The project has evolved somewhat over the years but originally was started by Thelma Wynne after whom it is named.
Contact Judy Leach, 204-774-1864 to volunteer.
Another program sharing space in St. Matthew's Church is the Friendship Sewing Circle. Women from various parts of the city come together Wednesday mornings in the Drop-In area for fellowship, sewing and learning other crafts.
